Smoked Salmon Breakfast Frittata in a skillet and on a black plate.

This Smoked Salmon Breakfast Frittata is a fun, easy way to start your day! It takes all the best parts of a smoked salmon bagel and folds them into silky eggs. Then it’s topped with everything bagel seasoning.

Plus it’s naturally low carb, gluten-free, dairy-free, keto, Paleo and Whole30 friendly.

This post was most recently updated January 7, 2024. The recipe used to be called “Everything Bagel Frittata.”

Why this recipe works

I’m always looking for smoked salmon recipes for breakfast. And one of my favorite options used to be a smoked salmon bagel sandwich, especially if it’s on an everything spice bagel.

But since I went gluten-free, those bagels are off-limits. So I took all the good stuff from the bagel sandwich – smoked salmon, red onion, capers, even cream cheese – and tossed out the bagel.

I decided to use them in a frittata instead. A “frittata” is like an Italian version of quiche but without the crust. It’s quick and easy to whip up and you can make it so many ways. And I know it might sound weird to mix things like capers into eggs, but it works so well! They add just a little salty, tangy bite to contrast the smooth, creamy eggs, salmon and cream cheese.

Plus anything topped with everything bagel seasoning (a blend of black and white sesame seeds, poppy seeds, dried garlic, dried onion and salt) has to be good.

So now you can eat a healthy smoked salmon breakfast without the bagel!

What you need

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup diced onion (from about 1/4 of an onion)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons capers, drained –  these add a tangy bite to help cut through the creamy eggs, salmon and cream cheese
  • 3 oz. smoked salmon – check the ingredients for Paleo/Whole30; ideally they’ll only include salmon and seasonings
  • 1/4 cup regular or dairy-free cream cheese – (check ingredients for Paleo/Whole30; I like Kite Hill)
  • 1 tablespoon everything bagel spice seasoning (sometimes called everything but the bagel spice)
  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil, olive oil or ghee
  • 1/8 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • freshly ground black pepper

Equipment:

  • a cutting board and chef’s knife to to chop the red onion
  • a 10″ non-stick, oven-safe skillet with a lid
  • a mixing bowl (get this whole set! The little bowls are extremely handy!) and whisk for the eggs
  • a thin spatula for sliding the frittata out of the pan
  • measuring spoons (these are my favorite because they fit in spice jars)

How to Make this Smoked Salmon Breakfast Frittata

Step 1

Heat the oil in the skillet over medium heat. Add the diced red onion and sauté, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 4-5 minutes.

Step 2

Meanwhile, in a medium mixing bowl, whisk the eggs with the salt and some black pepper until smooth.

Step 3

Stir the capers into the eggs and pour into the skillet. Stir everything around so the onions and capers are distributed evenly.

Step 4

Tear off bite-sized pieces of smoked salmon and distribute throughout the frittata, pushing down gently so they don’t stick up too much. Repeat with small spoonfuls of the cream cheese.

Step 5

Cover the pan, turn the heat down to medium low and let it cook so the edges and bottom set.

Turn on the broiler.

Step 6

Uncover the pan and broil the frittata for 3-4 minutes to cook it through, rotating the pan 180° halfway through the cooking time, if possible.

Step 7

Sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning, let it cool for 5 minutes and then dig in!

You can use a yellow onion instead of red.

You can omit any part you don’t like – the capers, cream cheese, etc.

If you omit the cream cheese, you can add ¼ of your favorite milk to add a creamy texture to the eggs.

You can add ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes if you want a bit of spice.

Can I make this Smoked Salmon Breakfast Frittata ahead of time?

The frittata can be kept in the fridge for up to 4 days. Leftovers can be served cold or room temperature.

What a genius idea! I used to love those everything keto bagels until my body was like “NO MORE DAIRY”. This is the perfect substitute and so much more filing with all the protein.

Ugh, I hear you on the dairy. My body tells me that too. It’s so frustrating! But luckily this is really good with the almond milk cream cheese.
