Mango Tajín Popsicles on a plate and a hand holding one up with two bites taken out of it.

These Mango Tajín Popsicles are a cool, refreshing, slightly spicy treat! You just need a few ingredients and five minutes to make these mango popsicles with Tajín, a popular Mexican seasoning of dried chilies, salt and lime.

And they’re easy to make dairy-free, vegan and Paleo friendly.

Why this recipe works

Tajín is a seasoning blend of dried chilies, salt and dried powdered lime juice. It’s not so much spicy as it is savory from the chilies and zippy from the lime. Invented in Mexico in 1985, Tajín is often sprinkled on fresh fruit such as mango or watermelon as a snack. The contrast between the sweet, juicy fruit and punchy seasoning is irresistible.

You can find Tajín in the Latin/Mexican section of almost any well-stocked grocery store or online.

So after I created these easy mango popsicles, I realized adding Tajín would make them even more flavorful. The sweet, creamy mango contrasts with the chili and lime in a way that has to be tasted to fully understand. Again, the chilies don’t make it spicy in a hot way, but in a subtly savory way.

I also add yogurt to make the popsicles even creamier, plus honey for just a bit more sweetness.

To make these mango popsicles with Tajín dairy-free, vegan and/or Paleo friendly, please see the FAQ below.

What you need

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups (16 oz.) cubed mango, fresh or frozen (thawed if frozen) – Mango blends well into a smooth, creamy texture, making it perfect for popsicles.
  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) plain, unsweetened yogurt – This adds even more creaminess to the popsicles.
  • 1 tablespoon honey or pure maple syrup – This adds just a touch of extra sweetness to balance the chilies and lime from the Tajín.
  • 1 tablespoon Tajín – See above or the FAQ below for more details about Tajín.

Equipment:

  • a blender
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • popsicle molds – <– This is the set of molds that I use. If you use a different set, you might get more or less than 6 popsicles depending on their size.

How to make Mango Tajín Popsicles

Step 1

Add the mango, yogurt, honey and Tajín to a blender and blend until completely smooth.

Step 2

Add the mango mixture to the popsicle molds and freeze for at least 4 hours. When ready, you might have to run the molds under hot water for a few seconds to release the popsicles.

If possible, I like to take the popsicles out of the freezer 10-15 minutes before eating them so they have a chance to soften a bit and lose the harsh freezer coldness.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Tajín?

Tajín is a seasoning blend of dried chilies, dried powdered lime juice and salt. It was invented in Mexico in 1985 and has become a popular condiment. It’s often sprinkled on fresh fruit such as mango or watermelon as a snack.

But it’s also used on chicken and vegetables, in marinades and sauces and in cocktails as well.

Is Tajín bad for you?

Because Tajín is just a blend of mild dried chilies, lime and salt, it’s not bad for you. There are no artificial colors or flavors and no sugar.

Can I make substitutions?

You can use maple syrup, agave nectar or sugar in place of the honey.

You can use full-fat, unsweetened coconut milk in place of the yogurt (but there might be a subtle coconut flavor).

If you want spicy mango popsicles, add a pinch of cayenne powder to the mango mixture with the Tajín.

How long will Mango Tajín Popsicles last in the freezer?

These will last indefinitely but might start to lose flavor after 3 months or so.

How do I make these Mango Tajín Popsicles vegan?

Use maple syrup, agave nectar or sugar in place of the honey. Use a vegan yogurt in place of the regular yogurt.

How do I make these Mango Tajín Popsicles dairy-free?

Use a dairy-free yogurt (I like Kite Hill or Harmless Harvest) in place of the regular yogurt.

How do I make these Mango Tajín Popsicles Paleo?

Use a Paleo-friendly yogurt (I like Kite Hill or Harmless Harvest) in place of the regular yogurt.
