This Homemade Shamrock Shake is a thick, creamy, frosty treat!

It’s a copycat version of the classic fast-food treat but made with just 3 ingredients, including fresh mint.

And this is a vegan shamrock shake made with dairy-free ingredients, so anyone can enjoy it.

Homemade Shamrock Shake

A typical shamrock shake has a lot of ingredients and, not surprisingly, a lot of them are not good for us.

Now I know, it’s not something you have every day so why worry about the ingredients?

Even though that’s true, when it’s a part of the Standard American Diet (SAD), which already contains a lot of sugar, processed food and preservatives, the effects accumulate.

So why not enjoy a quick, easy homemade version that tastes amazing without the unnecessary stuff?

But to be clear, I wouldn’t call this a healthy shamrock shake, either. Healthier than the regular version, for sure. But even though it uses ice cream,  overall you’re consuming a lot less sugar while getting all the health benefits of fresh mint.

And when a shake is this creamy and dreamy, you won’t care what is or isn’t in it.

Alright, enough chit chat. Let’s do this!

What you need to make a vegan Homemade Shamrock Shake

fresh mint in a measuring cup, almond milk and vanilla ice cream in glass bowls, all on a wooden cutting board

Ingredients:

  • fresh mint
  • coconut milk vanilla ice cream (I developed this recipe using the Soy Delicious Coconut Milk Vanilla Ice Cream)
  • unsweetened plain almond milk (I used the 365 brand but I’d also use the Elmhurst brand)

I like to use coconut milk ice cream and almond milk so the two flavors cancel each other out. The shake doesn’t taste too coconutty or too almond-y. Plus the vanilla in the ice cream adds a nice extra flavor.

You might also notice there’s no peppermint extract in this. It’s not my favorite ingredient so I skip it. But if you want to bump up the mint flavor, add a few drops.

Equipment:

  • blender
  • measuring cups
  • measuring glass (or just use the markings on the blender jar)

How to make a Homemade Shamrock Shake

I mean, do we really need instructions?

Just add all the ingredients to a blender and blend!

I let it go for quite some time to make sure the mint is really blended as well as possible. Otherwise you might get a lot of gritty bits.

Substitutions and variations

  • Use whatever vanilla ice cream you prefer, just know that different types might change the flavor
  • Use whatever plain, unsweetened milk you prefer, just know that different types might change the flavor
  • Want a more vibrant green color? Add a few drops of natural food coloring.
